We had chance to take a private tour and enjoy this empty space for a few hours before a memorable opening party that included a set by Ricardo Villalobos.
Torre rises above the expansive Fondazione’s compound, an architectural assemblage which encompasses seven old warehouses recovered from a 1916 distillery and three newly built structures.
Within its six sprawling exhibition levels, flooded with streaming natural light, Torre will be a feast even for the most demanding art connoisseur. “Atlas,” a permanent art project blossomed from a dialogue between artistic and scientific superintendent Germano Celant and La Signora, the formidable Miuccia Prada, displays an editing of outstanding works created between the 1960s and 2016 by stellar names such Damien Hirst, Mona Hatoum, John Baldessari, Carla Accardi, Jeff Koons, Walter De Maria, and Pino Pascali— to name a few.
A favorite on this exhibition is the “Giant Mushroom Upside Down Sculptures” installation by Carsten Höller.
Imposing in scale, in curatorial brilliance, and visual force, the artworks boldly confront the challenging architectural spaces and the surrounding landscape in a play of balanced assonance and disruptive contrasts—a very Prada-esque attitude indeed.
