Jim Thompson
On my last trip to Thailand, I stayed in Bangkok and had the occasion to visit Jim Thompson’s house. It was a great opportunity to discover the world of another creative mind, a true esthete. It was also refreshing to get away from the typical touristic spots. A haven of peace it was.
Jim Thompson is mainly known for his textile company “Jim Thompson Fabrics”. I was blessed to have visited its silk farm on a previous travel through the province of Nakhon Ratchasima, north of Bangkok. Another must see.
The house is a complex of pavilions that comprises traditional Thai villas from various parts of Thailand.
The bigger pavilion is basically a huge house full of collectibles, old drawings, and embroidered fabrics…
That goes without mentioning the wonderful and lush garden brimming with greenery, flowers and ponds, home to colourful fishes. Incredible.
The collection features some very old Buddha statues as well as a beautiful and odd selection of ceramics.
I remember two small quite unusual chamber pots: one, for women, is in the shape of a frog, and the other, for men, made in the shape of a cat. They are absolutely adorable!
This tour was so inspiring. If you were to travel to Bangkok, I highly recommend you to visit this place.
